At Hampton Swim School, the safety and wellbeing of every child is at the heart of what we do.

We want every child to feel safe, supported, respected and comfortable at Hampton, so they can learn to swim, build confidence and develop lifelong water safety skills.

Our commitment

Hampton Swim School is committed to providing a safe, educational and fun environment for children to learn to swim and build water safety and life skills. We nurture, achieve and celebrate the progress of children and families every day, and we hold a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse, and to any allegation or safety concern.

We identify and minimise risks to children, embed child protection into recruitment and induction, and train and support our people on an ongoing basis to understand the role they play in keeping children safe.

This commitment includes upholding the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families across everything we do, consistent with Queensland's Universal Principle.

Hampton Swim School acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we operate, opening major events, inductions and formal communications with an Acknowledgement of Country.

Creating a safe environment

Everyone at HSS has a role to play in keeping children safe.

We work to create an environment where children can learn and participate safely by:

  • identifying and managing risks to children's safety and wellbeing
  • recruiting and inducting staff with child safety in mind
  • providing ongoing training and support to our team
  • maintaining clear expectations for appropriate behaviour and professional boundaries
  • listening to children and taking their views and concerns seriously
  • providing families with opportunities to raise concerns, provide feedback and contribute to improvements
  • promoting an inclusive environment where every child and family is treated with dignity and respect.

We also expect children, families and our team to contribute to a safe and positive environment for everyone.

Children speaking up

Children should feel comfortable speaking up if something doesn't feel right.

We encourage children to talk to a trusted adult if they feel worried, uncomfortable, unsafe or if something has happened that they don't think is right.

At Hampton Swim School, this might be their parent or carer, swim teacher, another member of our team or another trusted adult.

We listen to concerns and take them seriously. Children do not need to find the perfect words or be certain that something is wrong before speaking up.

If a child tells you about something that concerns you, please let a member of the Hampton team know as soon as possible.

Our expectations at the pool

We want every child to feel safe, comfortable and ready to learn.

When you arrive for a lesson, please remind your child to:

  • wait until their teacher calls them before entering the pool
  • stay with their parent/carer while waiting for their lesson
  • listen to their teacher and follow instructions in the pool
  • treat other swimmers and our team with kindness and respect
  • tell their teacher, parent, carer or another trusted adult if something doesn't feel right or makes them uncomfortable.

These simple expectations help us create a safe and positive environment for everyone.

Photography and video

We know that families enjoy capturing and celebrating their children's swimming progress.

Hampton Swim School has Photography and Recording Guidelines that apply to photography and video involving children at our pools. These guidelines provide consistent expectations for taking, using and sharing images and recordings of children.

A single set of guidelines applies across Hampton Swim School so that families and staff have clear and consistent expectations.

Social media and online communication

Hampton Swim School uses social media to share information, celebrate our swimmers and showcase what's happening.

We take the privacy, safety and wellbeing of children seriously. Our social media and online communications are managed in accordance with Hampton's child safety, social media and communication standards.

Staff use approved communication channels when communicating with families and maintain professional and appropriate boundaries when communicating with children and families.

If you have a concern about a photograph, video, social media content or online communication involving Hampton, please speak with a member of our team or use our Have Your Say form.

Families having their say

Families have an important role to play in helping us improve how we support children.

We welcome feedback, ideas and suggestions about our programs, communication, facilities, customer experience and the way we support children and families.

You can provide feedback at any time through our Have Your Say form.

We also seek feedback from families through our annual Family Feedback & Improvement Survey. This includes questions about children's safety and wellbeing, whether families feel comfortable raising concerns, and what Hampton could do to improve.

Feedback is reviewed by the relevant Hampton team and may inform improvements to our policies, practices, programs and family experience.

Cultural safety and inclusion

Hampton Swim School is committed to providing an environment where every child feels safe, respected and included.

This includes upholding the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families, consistent with Queensland's Universal Principle.

We recognise that children and families come from diverse cultural backgrounds and family structures. We aim to communicate respectfully and inclusively and to listen to the experiences and perspectives of children and families.

Where relevant, HSS will seek input from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, community representatives or organisations when developing or reviewing approaches that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.

Raising a concern

If you have a concern about a child's safety or wellbeing at HSS, we want you to speak up.

You can raise a concern with a member of the HSS team or use our Have Your Say form.

You do not need to be certain that something is wrong before raising a concern. We take all child safety and wellbeing concerns seriously and will respond in accordance with our child safety processes.
